Roe v. Wade Overturned: Separating Fact From Fiction

The overturning of Roe v. Wade in June 2022 shifted women’s rights by giving people the opportunity to now vote on this issue, determining for themselves how their residing state should act in reference to abortion laws.

With all the change, it can be difficult to differentiate fact from fiction. Abortion access in the U.S. and in Texas have changed since the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Keep reading to learn more.

What Has Changed in the States

When the Supreme Court overruled the original 1973 abortion decision, it restored power to the states and allowed them to vote on the issue of abortion. Now, the people of each state can elect individuals who share their beliefs and who will institute abortion laws on their behalf.

What Doesn’t Change

Is Ectopic Pregnancy Treatment Accessible?

Yes! There are no laws restricting treatment for ectopic pregnancy, as it’s a completely different method than abortion.

Ectopic pregnancy is a non-viable pregnancy that requires medical attention, while abortion is a pregnancy option that terminates an existing viable pregnancy. No current laws restrict this essential care for women.

Can Women Still Get Medical Treatment for Miscarriages?

Absolutely. New abortion bans do not affect a woman’s right for medical treatment that is essential in safeguarding her health and well-being.

Women who need miscarriage treatment still have full access to maternal care under the state’s laws.

Abortion Access in Texas

30 days after Roe v. Wade was overturned, all abortions were banned in the state of Texas. Abortion in Texas is now completely restricted and is not allowed even before a heartbeat can be detected. There are no exceptions for rape or incest, but only an exception to protect the life of the mother.
