What the Drugs Actually Are
The abortion pill is a two-drug regimen. Mifepristone blocks progesterone, the hormone that sustains a pregnancy. Misoprostol is administered 24 to 48 hours later, causing the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy. The FDA approves this regimen only through 10 weeks of pregnancy and does not recommend purchasing these drugs online.
Why Online Sources Are a Health Risk
Many pharmacies selling abortion drugs online ship from outside the US, where FDA oversight does not apply. There is no way to verify whether the pills contain the correct drug, whether the dosage is accurate, or whether the instructions are safe.
Three Things Only An Ultrasound Can Tell You
Online ordering skips the medical step that protects you most. Without an ultrasound, three questions go unanswered:
- How far along are you? The regimen is only approved through 10 weeks. An estimate is not enough.
- Where is the pregnancy located? An ectopic pregnancy develops outside the uterus and requires immediate medical treatment. Abortion drugs will not resolve one.
- Is the pregnancy still progressing? About 1 in 4 known pregnancies end in miscarriage. If one has already occurred, abortion is not the correct medical procedure.
Without these answers, the risk of complications, including incomplete abortion, heavy bleeding, and infection, increases significantly.
