I’ve Already Had an Abortion and Don’t Want Another One. What Are My Options?

Finding out you’re unexpectedly pregnant again can make it feel like your world has stopped—and if you’ve had a previous abortion and don’t want another one, you’re likely feeling paralyzed about how to move forward.

What you’re feeling is understandable. However, it’s important to know that abortion isn’t your only option. Your other pregnancy choices include parenting and adoption.

While only you can decide which pregnancy decision is right for you, learning more about your options and the available support can help you move forward.

How Can I Decide What Option Is Right for Me?

When thinking about your pregnancy options, it’s essential to ask yourself the following question: If circumstances weren’t a factor, which pregnancy option would I choose and why?

This question is critical because circumstances change, but your heart’s desire remains. If you have a heart for parenting or forming a relationship with your child, parenting or adoption might be the best choice.

Adoption

Adoption is a choice that’s full of options that honor your goals and desires for your child’s future.

When making an adoption plan, there are several options available, depending on your goals and desires:

  • Closed Adoption: Closed adoptions keep your identifying information completely anonymous, which means the adoptive family and child won’t know anything about you. This option is rare today, but it might be best if you need to protect your identity.
  • Open Adoption: As the name suggests, open adoption fosters open communication between you, the child, and the adoptive family. You get to decide how much communication you want and in what ways (phone calls, in-person visits, etc.). It also gives the child the opportunity to develop a relationship with you in the future.
  • Semi-Open Adoption: This is similar to open adoption, but instead, an adoption agency or attorney will mediate all communication.

Parenting

Parenting can seem complicated and maybe even impossible given your current situation, but if you have a heart to parent, you owe it to yourself to explore this option.
